Students

Our Disability Support Program encompasses a district-wide effort designed to serve adults with special needs. Legislation was passed in 1974 that required all regional occupational centers to provide special instruction and supportive services to enrolled adults with visual, hearing, orthopedic disabilities, or other conditions.

Our Program was established in 1975 and was assigned the responsibilities of supervising the implementation of those supportive services necessary to complete job preparation classes. Also, special classes for adults with disabilities were initiated for students through the Community Adult School setting. In 1979 a state mandated level of service was established causing the rapid increase of classes offered to those students.

Currently, more than 10,000 students with disabilities annually enroll in a variety of vocational training and adult education classes throughout the district. Most students are also clients of various organizations or agencies serving persons with disabilities, such as the State Department of Rehabilitation, Department of Developmental Services, Regional Centers, independent living centers, or non-profit agencies.
