Are the DSP Training classes free?

Yes, however, you must provide a vender code from your group home.

What is a DSP and what do they do?

Direct Support Professionals work primarily in licensed care facilities providing assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities.

Do I have to be certified to work as a DSP?

Yes. Within one year of your hire date you must complete the Year One 35-hour Training or pass the Challenge Test. Within your second year of employment you must complete the Year Two 35-hour Training or pass the Challenge Test.

Are there advantages to taking the Training class over the Challenge Test?

Yes. First of all, the training test is 36 multiple-choice, the challenge test is 75 multiple-choice questions. Attending the Training class provides you an opportunity to network with other DSP's and administrators. You also receive the resource guide, free of charge.

What are the recent changes in the Challenge Test?

Beginning September 1, 2007, the Year One and Year Two Challenge Test will incorporate a skill check component that will require DSP's to demonstrate how to correctly assist individuals with the self-administration of medications.

Is the Training or Testing available in any in languages other than English?

No. Both the Testing and Training are offered only in English. Many students who use English as a second language also attend ESL classes.

How do I sign-up for a Training Class?

Call (818) 360-2095, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday thru Friday. You may also use our Online Registration.

How much does it cost to take the Training?

There is no charge if you are currently employed as a DSP or administrator.

Can I take the Training if I am not currently employed as a DSP?

Yes. If you are not currently employed as a DSP or administrator you must provide a written letter from your Regional Center requesting the training.

What do I need to bring the first day of class?

A picture identification and your facility vendor code.

How long will it take to receive my test results?

Usually, 2-4 weeks.

How can I find out my test score?

Your test score is indicated in the Serial Number on your certificate.

Do I have to renew my DSP certification?

No. Upon completion of the 70-hour training and/or passing the certification exam, you have met the state requirements.

What happens if I do not pass the Challenge Test?

You are allowed only one Challenge Test. If you score below the pass rate on the Challenge Test (75%) you must proceed to the training.

What happens if I do not pass the test after taking the Training Classes?

If you score below the pass rate on the training test will receive notification of the areas in which improvement is needed. Additional training will be made available through your administrator. You may repeat the Training class twice.

Can administrators take the Training Classes for CEU's?

Yes. You may be credited with CEU's for each of the 35-hour Training Classes.
